The Rottweiler is believed to be descended from Roman shepherd dogs. The dogs were used to keep the flock together and protect the food source at night. As the demand for their responses decreased, the Rottweiler was on the brink of extinction. Fortunately, a group formed in the early 20th century established the traditional breed. The Rottweiler is a very intelligent and efficient dog. Their endurance and trainability make them excellent defense, police, and therapy dogs.
